Aggregate of economic relations which arise up concerning the pension providing in the economic system. Finding out of essence of the pension providing and determination of his place and role in composition the institute of social defence of population, study of specific of functioning and reformation of the pension systems in the countries of EU with different models of social defence and grant of recommendations on reformation of the pension system of Ukraine in the direction of instrumental in economic development. Methods: dialectics, systems approach, comparison, generalization and statistical method. The results got in the process of research complement and in theory develop the analysis of essence and place of the pension providing in the system of social defence of population. Conclusions, suggestions, the recommendations formulated in dissertation can become a base at development of long-term national strategy of development of the pension providing. Determination of the category "pension system" is improved, the method of calculation of relative index is inculcated "coefficient of life on a pension", the criteria of classification of the pension systems are developed, systematization of models of pension defence is conducted in the countries of EU.
