Essay

For the first time in the Ukrainian as well as in the native Hellenic studies, the author singles out an interaction between transitivity and verb valency, pertaining equally to the morphological, to the semantic and to the syntactic theories. The author also introduces Greek terminology meant to define such concepts as "valency", "distribution", "combinability". The research also identifies the major types of predicates, existing in Modern Greek. The author has accomplished a lexical and a semantic differentiation of explicitly and implicitly transitive verbs, coined their lexical content, morphological arrangement as well as the syntactic behavior of object-biased syntaxemes. The author introduces to the scientific community the concept of "a verb of variable valency" and defines the functional specificity of Greek intransitive verbs.
