Tarasova V. Semantic field 'Vehicles' in modern English, German, Russian and Ukrainian

The thesis deals with investigation and comparative analysis of the lexical means expressing 'vehicle' in the English, German, Russian and Ukrainian languages. The analysis results reveal both similarities and differences. Similar features prevail over differences in the semantic fields 'Vehicle' of English, German, Russian and Ukrainian. To similar characteristics one can refer the structure of the field, the stock of the basic lexical means of the expressing 'vehicle', their hierarchy. The main differences of the means of the languages under comparison manifest themselves in the presence of a certain element of the field organization, their quantitative characteristics, specificity of their semantics. The similar characteristics are caused by the genetic kinship of German and English on the one hand, and Russian and Ukrainian on the other one. The differences are conditioned by the peculiarities of their systems and structures, cultural and historic factors.
