The thesis highlights phenomena of synonymy and variance in the Ukrainian scientific and technical terminology. It is the first attempt of comprehensive analysis of synonymy and variance at different levels (phonetic, lexical, word-building, morphological, syntactic). The research analyzes reasons for appearance of synonymic and variant terms among authentic and foreign names, traces development of this phenomena in the Ukrainian scientific and technical terminology during the 20th - beginning of the 21st centuries and suggests the ways of avoiding unjustified synonymic and variant names of scientific phenomena.
