Levchenko O. Classics and modernism 1930 - 1940 as intertext of I. Murdoch's novels.

The objects are works by I. Murdoch and the intertext: works by S. Beckett, J. C. Powys, Plato, Romantic and modernistic poetry; works by ancient poets and R. Queneau's prose. The aim is the semantic-poetological comprehension of landmark literary works by I. Murdoch and their interpretation within the aspect of the textual interaction with the active literary context. The methods are those of historical literary study, methods of philological analysis (intertextual, semantic-poetological) and synthesis. The research presented is the first attempt in the Ukrainian literary criticism that focuses on the complex analysis of Iris Murdoch's novels in the course of their textual interaction (intertext). The main attention is attached not only to the elucidation of semantic and poetologic aspects of I. Murdoch's selected novels (all the more the late ones, e. g. The Good Apprentice, The Book and the Brotherhood, The Green Knight, Jackson's Dilemma, are still rather unfamiliar to Ukrainian readers and scholars), but also to trace I. Murdoch's literary growth and development. The intertextual analysis implies philological interpretation of literary works by Plato, Shakespeare, Romantic poets, Proust, Beckett, J. C. Powys, P. Val?ry, W. H. Auden as interactive context of Murdoch's novels; the scrutiny arrives at specifying the genre pattern of novels by Murdoch. The scope of the thesis involves the training courses and literary translation practice.
