An own definition of the term "business cycle" and an improved classification of the business cycle theories are offered. The main causes of transformational recession in the transitional economies are generalized. Comparative estimation of the empirical peculiarities of economic fluctuations in the transitional economies is executed. Their compliance to the conclusions of the main business cycle theories is tested. Assessment of the business cycles synchronization in the transitional economies and the euro zone is conducted. The prospects and directions of smoothing of economic fluctuations in Ukraine are defined.
