The system of methods of studying functions in school forms of mathematical profile has been elaborated and scientifically grounded in this research. This system is based on the concepts of competence approach. The structure of mathematical competence in the field of functions has been worked out, the criteria and the levels of mathematical competence accomplishment in the field of functions have been grounded. The main groups of cognitive-meaning complexes have been outlined. The process of studying functions is treated as a controlled process of their formation. The specific character of studying the functions line in school forms of mathematical profile has been investigated. The efficiency of the suggested system of methods has been confirmed experimentally.
