Druzhbyak S. Dynamics of Term-Building in Professional Economic Language: Structural, Semantic and Functional Aspects (A Study of Lexicographical Sources and Contemporary German Periodical Press)

This dissertation focuses on the comprehensive study of structural, semantic and functional aspects of term-formation dynamics of the professional economic German language. The research specifies structural and semantic characteristics of German economic terminological system together with its lexical units. The thesis elucidates the specificity of terminological nomination, as well as the ways of term-building, characteristic of German economic terms including semantic, represented by metaphorical and metonymical ways of term-building, morphological (affixation, word-compounding, blending and conversion, abbreviation) and syntactic ones (terminological word-combinations; idiomatic terms). Productive term-building patterns in German professional economic language have been identified. The background and role of loan words in modern German terminological system have been ascertained and their classification has been worked out. Main functions of economic synonymous, antonymic, polysemantic and homonymic terms in German professional periodical press have been established. Archaisation of the terminological units under study has been explained.
