Essay

The investigation is dedicated to a complex analysis of semantic potential of sentences with factive predicates on the basis of paradigmatics and syntagmatics. The differentiation criteria of predicate signs are established and deepened; the principles of typological characteristic of these units are defined. A new attempt in classification of factive predicate is made on the logical-semantic basis. According to it cognitive and emotive factive predicates are revealed. The analysis of semantics and structural types of sentences with factive predicates is made on the material of works of the Ukrainian writers of the XX th - beginning of the XXIst centuries, mass media materials. The subjective and objective content of sentences with factive predicates is described, the peculiarities of factive presupposition and modality represented by factive predicates in semantic structure of a sentence are analyzed. The minimum structure of sentences with factive predicates is determined as well as its potential and obligatory elements, the status of sentences with factive predicates in the system of syntactical units of Ukrainian language is specified. The parity of semantic and formal-grammatical structures is explained, the factors that influence asymmetry of semantic and syntactical structures are found out. The semantic and syntactical models of sentences with factive predicates are described. Faced as a source of information the referred work opens up great possibilities for subsequent scientific research, its results make a certain impact on development of theoretical aspects of semantic syntax. Actual material, main conclusions and generalizations can be used in writing textbooks and dictionaries.
