The dissertation focuses on the verbal expression of space in the short stories by M. Kotz'ubyns'ky of the Crimean and the Italian cycles in the context of short story in the end of the 19th - the beginning of the 20th century (works by I. Franko, V. Stefanyk, S. Vasyl'chenko, V. Vynnychenko). The language image of space is analyzed in the course of contemporary anthropocentric trends in linguistics, which are connected with the investigation of language world image, idiolects of writers, who played an important part in the process of the Ukrainian literary language development. General characteristics of the space image (horizontal and vertical) in the works by M. Kotz'ubyns'ky are presented; in particular lexical-semantic groups to determine space realities in the Crimean and the Italian cycles are classified and analyzed. The expressive means of landscapes depicting by M. Kotz'ubyns'ky (metaphor, epithet) are characterized from the point of view of their structure and semantics. Impressionism features of the space image reflection in the writer's short stories are determined
