This research analyses the history of period learning in rhetorical Ukrainian and Russian linguistics, determines its differential signs; explores the correspondence between the period and complex syntax unit, explores the notion of syntactic intention used in works of Maksym Rylsky. It discovers and describes structurally semantic features of classical period and its modified forms in terms of syntactic intention. It analyses additional syntax elements that form the bifurcation of intonation. It traces the relationship with other stylistic figures characterizes stylistic functions of periods in Maksym Rylsky's idiomatic style.
