Essay

Dissertation is devoted to the architecture of masonry synagogues of Right-Bank Ukraine of XVI - XX centuries in a historical timeframe. Based on the analysis of 370 preserved and lost synagogues, the principles and rules of development of urban planning, spatial planning, structural, three-dimensional compositions, construction, technological, plastic-figurative and stylistic features in the context of European and local traditions were determined. Also specified and determined were the dating of some of the synagogues, and the main stages of their construction. In this work the factors that influenced the architectural and spatial organization of synagogues were reviewed. A complete picture of the architecture of masonry synagogues of Right-Bank Ukraine, as a phenomenon of Jewish sacral architecture, was developed. Compiled is a catalogue of the synagogues researched, their condition investigated and determined, and the value of the existing 227 buildings proven. Recommendations are proposed for future use of the existing synagogues as centres for restoration of the historical memory of the lost Jewish communities. This paper develops scientific recommendations for the conservation, restoration and reconstruction of the preserved synagogues. The most significant examples are recommended for inclusion in lists of architectural monuments.
