Essay

The thesis is devoted to the solutions concerning repair and update of water-piping using polyethylene pipes. Main factor decreasing the operation life of water-pipes include interior and exterior pipe corrosion, the transport load impact, hydraulic shocks, low temperature, low-quality ground environment and others. The primary methods for preparing pipes for repair and update, first of all for cleaning the interior surface of the pipes, were considered. The existing methods for repair and update including cut-and-cover method and trenchless technology were presented. The main attention was given to the Relining method that becomes increasingly popular when using polymer pipes. The appropriateness of using polyethylene pipes for repair and update works on water-piping was grounded, the advantages and imperfections of polyethylene pipes were given. It was ascertained that a significant imperfection of these pipes is linear deformation that can take place during the pipe's service. The theoretical calculations and laboratory research for determining the measurements of linear deformation of polyethylene pipes under conditions of temperature change were implemented. As a result the engineering factors that enable to resist deformation of both the new piping that is being built by cut-and-cover method and the existing one that is being updated using trenchless technology were determined. The methods of determining the foreseen linear deformation of polyethylene pipes and the necessary quantity of stationary supports when placing polyethylene pipes were developed. The technical-organizational solutions for repair and update of water-piping carried out by cut-and-cover and trenchless methods were developed.
