Essay

A manifestation of functional and semantic category of appraisal in a text of fiction is considered in the thesis. The status of appraisal in a system of language categories is shown and its role in a text is found out. Expression of an appraisal at different levels of the text information is analyzed, the functional relation of positive and negative appraisals is determined. Classification of intra-text gradation of appraisal is developed. The special features of ascending and descending gradation of positive and negative appraisals are examined.
