Essay

The dissertation deals with the theoretical and practical problems aimed at health protection of the population against radon effect. The formation peculiarities of radon levels and its decay products in the air of buildings located in industrial parks of iron-ore field are presented in the dissertation; seasonal variability of radon activity is revealed. As a result of radiation hygiene research levels of volumetric activity and equivalent equilibrium volume activity of radon in building air are defined, and effective irradiation doses for the population are evaluated. The dynamics of lung cancer development and risk factors for developing of this pathology are determined according to the research done on disease incidence among Krivoy Rog inhabitants. Obtained results concerning the seasonal variability of radon activity will be assumed as a basis for the concept of radon activity control within the region. Recommendations on radiological protection for the iron-mining region population are scientifically based.
