Essay

The object of our research is the English philosophic terminology in the modern British intellectual novel. The subject of our scientific work is semantic features and functions of philosophic terms in the modern British intellectual novel. The purpose of our research consists in discovering the features of the philosophic term semantics and functions in the modern British intellectual novel. The methodological basis of our work is the principle of the language and speech unity that has determined the choice of the logic and semantic approach to investigating philosophic terms in fiction. Achieving this purpose and solving specific tasks is based on applying a complex methodology that consists of the descriptive method, the analysis of dictionary definitions, the component analysis, the context analysis, and the quantitative analysis. The scientific novelty of our dissertation lies in the fact that we have determined the features of semantic migration processes namely terminologisation, transterminologisation, determinologisation on the basis of the philosophic terminology in English; proved the dependence of determinologisation types (despecialisation and full determinologisation) on term sems which are actualized in the modern British intellectual novel; singled out the informational (nominative, characteristic, text-forming, differential, compressive) and stylistic-pragmatic (expressive, emotive, evaluative) functions, which philosophic terms fulfill in the works of I. Murdoch, J. Fowles, W. Golding. The theoretical significance of our research is determined by its contribution to the development of terminology science, semasiology, stylistics and neology of the English language. The practical significance of obtained results lies in the possibility to use them in the courses of fundamental theoretical subjects of the English language: lexicology (Terminology, Semantic derivation), stylistics (Lexical stylistic devices), in the practice of lexicography and in the further students and postgraduate fellows' research.
