Essay

The object is the historical drama of L.A. Mey, dedicated to the period of the reign of Tsar Ioann the Terrible, and represented with the plays "The Tsar's Bride" and "The Maiden of Pskov"; the aim is to explore the historical drama of L.A. Mey, to analyze the features of the artistic embodiment of historical material in his dramatic works; the methods are descriptive, comparative, the method of structural analysis; the novelty is the reassessment of the role and function of historical sources that had defined conceptual foundations and structural and compositional structure of L.A. Mey's drama, the characteristics of historical views of L.A. Mey, embodied in his dramatic works, engaged foreigners documentary evidence about life and customs of Russian society of the XVI century and the peculiarities of the reign of Ioann the Terrible. There has been found the significance of these historical materials as additional sources of information, and the space-time structure of L.A. Mey's plays "The Tsar's Bride" and "The Maiden of Pskov" has been studied, for the first time the subject of a thorough analysis has become the system of characters of L.A. Mey's plays. In this work the description of all the characters has been introduced and on that ground the typology of the characters of the L.A. Mey's plays "The Tsar's Bride" and "The Maiden of Pskov" has been determined; the results - can be used in the working out of general lectures and special courses and seminars devoted to the study of Russian drama, including literary and historical processes of the second half of the XIX century on the Faculty of Philology and theatre schools; the branch is Philology
