Essay

This thesis is centered on a study of categorical semantics of frequency, which is a part of the universal category of aspectuality and is reflected in the multilevel linguistic means. In the course of analysis it was determined that frequency is a functional semantic category, which is based on the semantic opposition: "frequentative / semelfactive". The semantics of frequency is realized primarily in aspectual categories of aspect and modes of the verbal action. In the study, there were distinguished and described 14 semantic groups of verbs, which are grouped on the basis of a common component - frequency attribute, and which can be juxtaposed based on "frequentative / semelfactive" principle. During perfectivation, frequentative verbs can take on aspectual phasal modifications without losing the repetitive semantics of the basis-motivator. Contextual analysis showed that the semantics of frequency is present on various levels of context and is expressed by different linguistic means, which primarily include imperfective and perfective verb forms. The meaning of frequency may be strengthened or conditioned by the presence of lexical determinants of frequentative / semelfactive aspects, as well as syntactic constructions of frequency.
