Essay

This dissertation reviews the applicability of the closest connection as a choice-of-law principle (rule) for determination of the applicable law to legal relationships involving foreign elements. In particularly, it contains a research of historical conditions for origin of choice-of-law doctrine of the closest connection in private international law (i.e. its development stages: origin, formation and codification), describes contemporary codification models of the closest connection (i.e. American, Latin-American and European (this model, in turn, devides into two sub-models: early and modern) and considers new developments and tendencies, which are mainly emerged due to adoption of the Rome I and Rome II Regulations (for instance, rejection from monopoly role of the characteristic performer, specialization of the closest connection tailored to a separate types of the legal obligations etc.).
