Essay

The modification of the comedy genre in the works of Ivan Karpenko-Karyi from the viewpoint of History of literature (genesis of the comedy genre, tradition and І. Karpenko-Karyi's innovation, realistic principles, means of comic, poetics of conflict) is investigated in the thesis. The specificity of the dramatist's artistic thinking and his writing style paradigm - syncretism of romanticism, realism, symbolism and modernism are analyzed. Common and distinctive principles of creating satirical images and situations in comedies by I. Karpenko-Karyi "Martyn Borulya", "One Hundred Thousand", "Palyvoda of the Eighteenth Century", "The Owner" were found in comparison with the works by Shakespeare, F. Schiller, O. Ostrovskyi, M. Kropyvnytskyi, M. Starytskyi, M. Kulish. The features of genre forms in the dramatist's works are traced through the techniques of character and plot creation analysis and incorporation of the major trends of the writer's comedy genesis: satirical-ironic comedy with elements of tragicomedy ("Martyn Borulya"), satirical comedy with adventure-parable dramatic elements ("One Hundred Thousand"), satirical comedy with modernistic elements ("Palyvoda of the Eighteenth Century"), satirical comedy with elements of "coded realism" ("The Owner"), "serious" comedy with elements of moralizing parable ("Smart and Stupid"), "serious" realistic comedy ("Chumak"), "serious" intellectual and philosophical comedy with elements of modernism ("Sea of Life" and "Vanity").
