Tur O. Structurally-semantic types and functioning of new abbreviations in Ukrainian language at the end of the 20th - beginning of the 21st centuries

The thesis contains the investigation of structurally-semantic specificity of abbreviations and their functional characteristics in Ukrainian language at the end of the 20th - beginning of the 21st centuries. Conceptual approaches to the notion's "abbreviation" interpretation were under the thorough analysis. Criteria of abbreviations' correspondence to notional words' characteristics were substantiated in succession. The given research allows elaborating of structural and semantic classifications of new abbreviations; their structural types were logically examined. Peculiarities of foreign lexical cuts' functioning in Ukrainian were also ascertained. The given thesis characterizes such phenomena as polysemy, homonymy and variance in the sphere of new abbreviations. The functional styles' influence in abbreviations' using claimed to be dominant. Functional styles' peculiar features of different grammatical forms of abbreviations-neologisms as well as their derivational potential have been investigated consistently.
