Essay

The thesis is devoted to the problem of growing of late adolescent girls in relations with mother. The process of growing is considered in a context of the theory of separation-individuation. The Psychological Separation Inventory by J. Hoffman is adapted. The procedure of collecting and coding the data from interviews in the Grounded Theory method is described. The features of separation such as gaining autonomy and psychological distance from the mother have significant correlations with girls' perception of maternal attitude. Analyses of data identified five empirically distinct types of late adolescent girls' separation from their mothers: gaining autonomy, aspiration of dependence, struggle for independence, achievement of self-sufficient position and pseudo-autonomy development. The main factors which define separation in mother-daughter relations are girls' perception of features of the mother's emotional response and features of the mother's supervising behavior. Recommendations for psychotherapeutic, advisory and educational work with girls, young women and their mothers, regarding typical difficulties of separation are presented.
