Essay

The thesis focuses on the peculiarities of grammatical gender of the noun in Modern Greek. For the first time in the Greek and native Hellenic studies grammatical gender is analysed on the basis of the functional grammar, due to that gender assignment is examined within its functions. The main trends in the gender categorization in Modern Greek are defined. The interrelation of the grammatical gender with other noun categories is underlined. Gender of noun in Modern Greek is a classificatory multistructural morphological category which has two main functions: semantic and formal grammatical functions. Its semantic grammatical function expresses the notion of natural gender and is mostly represented by the masculine and feminine grammemes.
