Essay

The object is the psychoanalytical trend in the English and American literary criticism. The aim is to reveal the specific character of formation and development of the psychoanalytical trend in the English literary criticism in comparison with the analogous processes in the USA. The study presents a comparative analysis of the psychoanalytical theories of art and poetry developed by English and American literary critics H. Read, F. Lucas and F. Prescott, and analyses the specificity if of their critical methodology. The study demonstrates that theories of American and English literary critics are aimed at understanding of origins of a poetic work, formulating the ethical and aesthetic criteria of its assessment, search for the scientific basis of explaining the difference between romantic and classicistic types of art. Special emphasis is put on the problem of romantic tradition. Application spheres are the training courses.
