Essay

The dissertation provides an insight into the category of comparison in Anglo-American scientific discourse. The key idea behind this work is to conduct a comprehensive research of the category of comparison in light of its discursive, cognitive, functional, structural and culture-bound specificity in the language of science. Comparison is viewed as a core of scientific cognition. When the information is perceived, processed, or evaluated, this information is compared to a norm, or a standard. Comparing requires examining and then identifying how two or more things are similar or different. Relations of similarity and difference are fundamental for comparison, emphasizing its dual ontological nature.
