Essay

This thesis presents a comprehensive study of conversational implicatures as a medium for manifesting emotions in contemporary English discourse. The study specifies the definition of linguistic implication, differentiates between presupposition and implicature as its two pragmatic constituents, establishes the role of conversational implicatures in manifesting emotional meanings, and exposes communicative-pragmatic variability of conversational implicatures. The two aspects of this variability are communicative-strategic polifunctionalism and pragmatic co-reference of implicatures. Polifunctionalism means that the Speaker may employ one and the same implicature (violation of one and the same maxim of the Cooperative Principle) in pursuing different communicative strategies. Co-reference means that the Speaker may apply different implicatures (violation of different maxims of the Cooperative Principle) in pursuing one and the same communicative strategy. Interplay of communicative-strategic polifunctionalism and pragmatic co-reference of implicatures contributes to manifestation of emotions in confrontational and non-confrontational discourses. Key words: emotive discourse, conversational implicature, communiсative strategies and tactics, communicative-pragmatic variability of implicatues, polifunctionalism of implicatures, co-reference of implicatures.
