In the dissertation linguistic status of periphrasis as secondary nomination units and their nominative nature are specified. Functional and stylistic features of periphrasal nominations in modern Ukrainian journalistic texts and their connection with context, syntactic functioning were analyzed. In the dissertation semantic-syntactic types and semantic classes of periphrasal units are distinguished. Cognitive and onomasiological mechanisms of creation and perception periphrasal names are found out; their linguistic-cultural features, communicative and pragmatic possibilities and peculiarities of expressivity are defined.
