Pozhydayeva N. Lexical and Grammatical Peculiarities of English as International Auxiliary Language: Case Study of European Union Regulation Papers

This thesis focuses on revealing tendencies and regularities that ensure the formation of lexical and grammatical peculiarities in the English as international auxiliary language, a new variety of lingua franca, with regard to the situation of intercultural communication and language contacts. On the basis of complex comprehensive analysis of innovative nominative units pertaining to European administrative discourse lingual and extralingual factors influencing the formation of English as international auxiliary language has been established. There have been distinguished some ways of enriching the lexical system of the administrative English as international auxiliary language and as a sub-language of international communication in European Union, borrowings take the top position among them, innovations fill in the semantic gaps and follow the principle of language economy. The research establishes correlation between the aspect of native/second language and the preferences in synthetical/analytical genitive. The adverbial shift to the medial position as well as the formation of framed syntactical constructions is viewed as specific features of the grammatical system of English as international auxiliary language. It is claimed that innovations in the grammatical system of the sub-language of English as international language of European Union are determined by two opposite tendencies: analitization and sythetization. The first one is actualized in the predominant use of analytical genitive, the second - in flexible word order regarding the place of direct object in the sentences.
