Object - the teaching process in higher educational institutions of Ukraine in the late XIX-early XX century; the aim - on the basis of the analysis of scientific pedagogical sources and archival documents of the late XIX - early XX century to systematize the theoretical ideas and generalize the experience of following the principle of scientific teaching in the teaching practice of higher educational institutions in Ukraine within the researched period in order to implement the progressive ideas of the past in present day teaching practice in higher educational institutions; methods - general scientific, historical-pedagogical, problem-oriented, criteria-evaluating, comparative-historical, structural and retrospective; novelty - the research has been the first one to provide a comprehensive theoretical and practical analysis of the term " scientific" as a principle used in the process of teaching (in the late XIX-early XX century); the stages in the development of the principle of scientific teaching in higher educational institutions of Ukraine within the researched period are singled out; the experience and practical aspects of the observance of the principle of scientific teaching in the teaching process of higher educational institutions of Ukraine of the period under research are generalized and specified; the perspectives for the creative implementation of pedagogically valuable ideas, findings and efficient experience in present day teaching practice are considered; the system of requirements for teacher's pedagogical training to provide students' learning-cognitive activity organization based on the demands for scientific character of education has been scrutinized; results - the teaching course "Methodology of scientific pedagogical research" for the students of higher educational institutions of III-IV levels of accreditation has been prepared, the prospective ways for the creative following of the principle of scientific teaching in present day higher educational institutions have been presented; field - pedagogy
