Royik O. Semantic levelling of conjunctions in composite sentences in the Ukrainian literary language.

The paper focuses on the important problem of Ukrainian syntax, the place, the role and the meaning of conjunctions as the means of the composite sentence formation. The study examines the structural, semantic, grammatical and functional peculiarities of semantic levelling of conjunctions as analytical morphemes.The description and analysis of two grammatical functions of conjunctions enabled us to specify their grammatical heterogeneity. A comprehensive analysis of compound and complex sentences with semantically levelled conjunctions on the basis of modern Ukrainian fiction and publicistic texts is accomplished.According to their ability to perform semantic and syntactic function conjunctions are divided into semantic, asemantic and partially asemantic ones. The reasons, conditions and regularitues of the process of levelling in the structure of the conjunctions are defined. The specificity of their semantic and syntactic relations in both compound and complex sentenses that lies not only on their functional characteristics but the broad transpositional potential of coordinate and subordinate conjunctions is determined.
