Essay

The thesis is devoted to researching the concept of historical personality Ivan Mazepa in the dilogy "Youth of Mazepa" and "Ruin" by M. Starytskyi and in the pentalogy "Mazepa" by B. Lepkyi and to explaining the transformation and modification of hetman's image in different cultural and historical conditions. After defining and systematizing the scientific approaches of specialists in literature to studying of historical prose, the author of scientific studies interprets the originality of genre and the structure of historical Romance philology of M.Starytskyi and B. Lepkyi and also reveals the reception of their works in the Ukrainian history of literature. The research is conducted on the basis of world and native literary studies about Mazepa that gives the opportunities to see the evolution of "odious" hetman's image in the works of East and West European and Ukrainian authors, and the specificity of typological rising and forms of interliterary reception. The concepts of historical personage Ivan Mazepa are accomplished in the light of the most typical ways of forming the artistic image of the Ukrainian hetman with taking into consideration the correlation between the historical truth and artistic conjecture.
