Vasylyev Y. The role of the Odessa Physicians Society in the development of medical cause and science. 1849-1924.

Reseach object. Formation and development of civil medicine in Ukraine in XIX - beginning of XX century. Aim of work: to research medical community formation and its functioning in Ukraine. Research methods: historical and medical and historiographical analysis. Theoretical and practical results: in thesis periodization of Odessa Physicians society activities is introduce for the first time. Odessa Physicians Society is founded in 1849 and during the first decades it is solely a professional association of doctors who practiced in the city. Due to accepting of the typical statute (initiated by M. Sklifosovskyy) Odessa Physicians Society becomes one of the city medical societies. After Novorossiysk University foundation in Odessa members of Odessa Physicians society begin productive interaction with professors and teachers of Natural Department of Physic-mathematical Faculty. Meeting of the Odessa Physicians Society is the first event, where phagocytosis theory, suggested by I. Mechnikov, was not just announced, but also thoroughly and critically discussed. The summit of public-medical life is creation of specialized bacteriological center, called Odessa bacteriological station, it was the first establishment like that in the country and the second in the world. M. Gamaliya plays a significant role in creation of this establishment. Odessa Physicians Society takes part in Odessa Sanitary Organization. In the late nineteenth century O. Mochutkovskyy performs as initiator of publication of one of the country's first medical periodicals - "South-Russian medical newspaper" (1892-1897). Odessa Physicians Society works actively on population services improvement in Odessa. In 1903 the Society takes active part in emergency organization in the city. At the end of twentieth century a range of specialized medical societies appear. Odessa Physicians Society looses representative monopoly for all medical specialties, it turns into therapeutic society and becomes solely therapeutic one on 1924.
