Essay

The thesis employs an extensive basis of 17th-18th century Old Ukrainian sources of various styles and genres from the Central Naddniprianshchyna (Dnieper Ukraine) territory to research the morphological structure of non-finite verb formations (infinitives) and the paradigm of conjugate verbs, analyzing the means of expression of verb forms, and tracing the history of their formation. The paper identifies the chronological boundaries of the usage of verb forms, their functional yield and frequency. The primary reference used for comparison of the Old Ukrainian manifestations of inflections with the modern dialect material is the maps from the "Atlas of the Ukrainian Language". The paper determines the position of the analyzed usage of forms in the modern Ukrainian literary language. It is established that the 17th - 18th century Central Naddniprianshchyna dialect had in general already formed the system of verb forms very similar to its modern counterpart.
