The philosophical and legal understanding of the purpose of punishment is comprehended against the background of the evolution of the philosophical and legal thought, in the context of the diversity of interpretations of the purposes of punishment, taking into account historical features of the legal thought, and the emphasis on solving problem of coordination of components of the purpose of punishment with the basic universal humanistic values, as such, that its solution is important for elaborating theoretical foundations of policy in the fight against crime in Ukraine, improving the Ukrainian criminal law and its application .
