A complex theoretical and legal analysis of political parties in the political system of the society has been made in the thesis. The problems of political parties raised in home and foreign literature have been researched. Methodological principles of the study of the essence of political parties have been identified. The content and structure of the political system of the society has been analyzed. General theoretical analysis of a political party as a social and legal institute has been made. Available scholarly approaches to the principles of organization and activity of political parties as well as their functions in the political system of the society have been generalized. The importance of political parties in the course of civil society formation in Ukraine has been substantiated. Political parties have been researched as a component of the mechanism of check and balance in the conditions of civil society formation. The problems and prospects of modernization of the political system of Ukraine have been considered.
