Essay

The thesis focuses on the contrastive analysis of the names of dwellings and agricultural buildings (ND and NAB) in English, German, Russian, Ukrainian, French and deals with the semantic and structural peculiarities of these lexico-semantic groups. The primordial lexical units in NAB prevail over loanwords, while the latter predominates in ND. The research has resulted in the semantic classification of ND and NAB. Two main types are singled out: 1) ND for the universal purpose, divided into stationary and portable; 2) ND for the specific purpose that outnumber universal houses and have several subtypes. The group of NAB is presented by four main types: a number of them belong to the food and stock-raising buildings. The paper dwells upon the ways of semantic enrichment of the given nouns, index, degree and character of polysemy, the regularity of the unique and common semes' combinations in languages. The semantic classification of idioms with ND and NAB as well as the sources of their formation and types of their variation are determined. Typical relations among the elements of ND and NAB are synonyms, hyponyms and common nouns. There is a clear correlation between levels of polysemy and synonymy in ND and NAB: languages with a high level of synonymy have low polysemy. The Slavic languages show a large number of common signs, while the Germanic languages discover discrepancy in many aspects.
