Essay

The research focuses on the study of root and suffixal verbs and their noun derivatives in modern German, in particular on the analysis of verbal characteristics which influence the derivation of verbal nouns (VN) and their semantics. The semantic types of the motivating verbs (MV) and their verbal nouns have been identified, and the semantic classification of MV and VN has been proposed. The influence of the structural and lexical-grammatical characteristics of the MV on their productivity in noun formation has been analysed. The shares of participation of root and suffixal verbs in the noun formation have been specified. The conclusions made have been corroborated by the analysis of the language material, the quantative data, and the productivity indicator of verbs belonging to different semantic and structural types. The analysis of semantic and lexical-grammatical characteristics of the verbs having no noun derivatives permitted to reveal the factors that impede noun formation from these verbs and affect the productivity of the verbs in general. The semantics of VN, the number and semantics of derivatives formed from each verb have been considered. The verbs productivity in the formation of different semantic types of VN has been determined, the patterns of combinability for a number of semantic types of VN have been described.
