Essay

Ethnic prejudices are dispositions of habitus, negative attitudes to representatives of other ethnic groups which are based on overgeneralizations without feasible grounds and can be expressed in discriminative or hostile behavior. They are complex phenomena and consist of at least three relatively autonomous components namely cognitive, affective and conative. Also three separated propensities were singled out in the conative component: to support for institutional discrimination, to avoidance of immediate contacts, and to hostile behavior. Five main approaches to explanation of ethnic prejudice by macrosocial factors were marked out. Authoritarian personality approach supposes that certain social conditions form a personality with traits favoring prejudices.
