Essay

This dissertation offers the first research in Ukrainian literature of major life periods and work of Nadia Surovtseva, which is based on wide circle of sources. The researcher identifies the main phases of individual style development of the author and traces the autobiographical characteristics in prison and camp texts. This research work reveals the contribution made by N.Surovtseva into the development of Ukrainian modernism through her collection of impressionist works “On the other side”. On the basis of the collection of her works “On the other side”, “The silhouettes of Kolyma”, “Splinters” the researcher investigates the style, genre, idea and theme, ethic and philosophical dominants of small prose, characteristic for N. Surovtseva. The artistic chronotop, types of narration, and lexico-stylistic organization of her stories, novelettes, essays and sketches are analysed. The place and significance of the author in Ukrainian literature is identified not only as memoire writer but as modernist-impressionist of the 1920 s, who was one of the first to introduce the theme of camps in small literature genres.
