The objective is I. S. Turgenev's essays; the aim is to make the entire analysis of I. S. Turgenev's essay prose and to define its role in the development of the Russian essay; methods used in the research are the descriptive, structural, comparatively typological, the systematical analysis approach; the importance of this paper lies in the fact that the integral description of I. S. Turgenev's essay prose was made for the first time; the peculiarities of the author's creative personality and his world-views are being specified; I. S. Turgenev's input in the development of the essay in the Russian literature was defined, the combination of the social typological and common to mankind features peculiar to his essays is traced; the results of the research can be used in the process of the further research of the Russian essay, in teaching "The History of the Russian Literature in the XIX Century" course, in the study of I. S. Turgenev's works at secondary school, Arts College; the field is the philology
