Essay

This dissertation focuses on the lexical and grammatical characteristics of P.S?skind's idiolect in his novels and short stories. It defines the main components of author's individual style on the level of vocabulary, semantics and syntax. The dissertation highlights the stylistic functions of lexical and grammatical means as the expression of the author's s idiolect. It has been stated that postmodern features of P. S?skind's style of writing is revealed in the author's stylistic device of hyperbilization, the ways of word-creation and the specific use of grammatical structures. One of the main features of P. S?skind's idiolect is creation of new words and word combinations. It is claimed that the system of word formation which actualizes the author's idiolect comprises compounding, affixation, secondary nomination and wholephrasis. The writer's occasionalisms like "Ich-wie?-nicht-was-soll-es-bedeuten"are viewed as a specific way of word-formation which reflects intertextual links of P. S?skind's texts. It has been proved that different types of repetitions, ways of forming neologisms, syntactical structures with subjunctive mood, superlative forms of adjectives as stylistic devices constitute the main features of the author's idiolect. All these constituents create the stylistic integrity of his texts. Key words: idiolect, style, stylistic devices, occasionalisms, repetitions, word-building and word-formation, subjunctive mood, postmodern style of writing.
