Essay

This thesis focuses on revealing linguistic and cognitive properties of various types of tonality in the 20th century American poetic texts on the basis of comprehensive approach which integrates cognitive-semantic, conceptual, frame and textual analysis. Suggested integrated methodology of dominant emotional sense analysis of the poetic texts made it possible to classify tonality into three main types: optimistic, pessimistic and comic with the further subdivision of the latter into humoristic, ironic-humoristic, ironic-satiric, ironic-tragic, satiric. Cognitive procedures of stereotype schemata coordination, collision and intersection are proved to be the basis for subconscious mental simulation which leads to the emotional response of a reader. It is argued that cognitive operations of association and bissociation result in the schemata reinforcement, refreshment as well as enrichment and help to reveal the dominant emotional sense of a poem. Key words: tonality, emotional structure, prototypical reading, contexts of optimistic, pessimistic and comic, concept, schema reinforcement, enrichment, refreshment, cognitive procedures.
