In the Dissertation it is carried out the complex historical and legal analysis of the legal grounds for organizing and functioning of the Public Self- defense Formations (Fighter Battalions and Public Order Defense Groups) acting under the control of People's Commissariat for the Internal Affairs / Ministry of the Internal Affairs in the Western Regions of Ukraine within 1944-1954, based on the study of the legal and regulatory sources, archive documents and materials. The regulatory support for organizing and functioning of the Fighter Battalions and the supporting groups after liberation of the Western Regions of Ukraine from the German occupants is investigated.
