Essay

The thesis is the systematic research of William B. Yeats's works. It emphasizes a versatile nature of mythopoetic structure of the author's writings, tracing the ways of artistic reconstruction and adaptation of mythological elements in Yeats's poetics. Employing the mythological methodologies of textual analysis, based on theoretical conceptions of C.G. Jung, J. Campbell, M. Eliade, N. Frye, J. Frazer etc., the thesis investigates the mechanisms of introducing the archaic mythological elements into the text and the peculiarities of their functioning on the level of plot-structural organisation, narrative model and personage system of Yeats's works, which enables to reveal their archetypical nature. Comprehensive approach to the study of writer's oeuvre, including the analysis of his poetry, drama and prose of different periods, allows to draw the conclusion that at all stages of his creative evolution the Irish artist employs myth as a universal system of symbols, as a means of creating the fictional world, and a way of revealing the deep nature of human psychology.
