Klymenko T. Archetype symbolism in “Primary Chronicle”

In the dissertation, there is the analysis of the text of “Primary Chronicle”. The subject of the research is the archetype symbolism, which was used by the author in order to form the Character system in the chronicle text. The archetype analysis of “Primary Chronicle” proves the suggestion that archetypes and the symbols following the latter are of different origin (autochthonous written word, Bible, written samples of Western Europe). The archetype symbolism was widely used in the art of the Middle Ages, having caused the medieval symbolism appearance in the early literature in the period of Kyiv Rus, which influenced on the artistic structure and literature peculiarity of the chronicle prose, particularly on “Primary Chronicle”. Artistic originality of the chronicle is clearly seen due to various toposes (such as woods, battles, a cross, a book, a temple, a prayer request, justice of Heaven, internecine quarreling) used in the character system of the text, and due to depicting time and space, chronicle biographies of historical characters, who are seen as certain symbols or icons, which were formed in consequence of archetypes’ appearance in the text.
