Object: identities of inhabitants of the boundary area of the Carpathian region (Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathian and Chernivtsy regions). Aim: to work out conceptual principles of structuring and functioning of identities in the boundary area of the Carpathian region. Research methods: analysis and synthesis, description, comparison, system analysis , structural and functional analysis, method of the standardized telephone interview, secondary analysis of empiric data. Theoretical and practical results: features of development of the Carpathian region are characterized in the geopolitical context of socio-economic and political life that comes forward as pre-condition of functioning of unique identities, originality of structuring of national spatial identities of inhabitants of borderland that form the so-called borderline identity is characterized. Novelty: the features of the structuring and functioning of identities of the inhabitants of borderland where the boundary space serves as multiethnic contact zone are revealed. Degree of implementation: research materials are applied in courses "Ethnosociology", "Socio-cultural practices of regions of Ukraine", "Ethno-political management" for students of the Dragomanov National Pedagogical University.
