Essay

The thesis is devoted to the theoretical and legal aspects of the language policy in Ukraine. The research includes analysis of major factors that influence the formation and implementation of language policy, principles and goals that guide the state in the implementation of language policy. The historical and legal aspects of the language question in the context of human rights in the Ukrainian lands, as well as the theoretical and legal status of ethnic minorities and their right to use native language are also outlined in this paper. The most important spheres of society such as education and media concerning use of language are analyzed. In this regard the author proposes the main areas of activity that should guide every democratic state in the implementation of the language policy in education, as well as recommendations for the successful implementation of the language policy in such areas as television, radio and electronic media. The features of the implementation of language policy in the Baltic states, Ireland by identifying its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the possibility of domesticating the language best practices of these countries in Ukraine are examined. Future directions and recommendations for improvement of language policy in general and language legislation of Ukraine in particular are analyzed and proposed.
