Essay

Greek grammatical science set the principles in the formation of linguistic terminology. Ancient Greek philosophers were the first to study the language, though they were not interested in the grammar in the first place, but the relation of the speech to the process of thinking. Only the scientists of the Alexandrine school started separation of certain parts of speech and semantic research of their characteristics (grammatical accidents). A very big achievement of ancient Greeks was a classification of the eight parts of speech which came to us in the exposition of Dionysius of Thrace. Roman scientists often used theories and principles of Greek grammarians by means of calking, which sometimes looked absurd (for example, usage of the article, not characteristic of the Latin language).
