. Object - the process of professional training of students in higher education institutions; aim - to find out the influence of implementation of the scientifically substantiated didactic system of students' cognitive independence forming on the level of their professional competence; methods -theoretical, empirical, of mathematical statistics; novelty - the research is the first to substantiate a didactic system of students' cognitive independence forming during their study of psychological and pedagogical disciplines; the definition of the term "cognitive independence" as a system of internal personality formations revealed in personality's practical activity directed at independent mastery of general, special and professional knowledge, habits and skills in order to achieve some educational goal has been specified; the forms, methods and modes of teaching oriented to students' cognitive independence forming during their study of psychological and pedagogical disciplines have been analysed; results - the scientifically substantiated didactic system of students' cognitive independence forming during their study of psychological and pedagogical disciplines has been used in teaching "Pedagogy" and "Psychology" and during teaching practice; the teaching course "Innovative Methods of Teaching" has been worked out and used in the teaching process. The researched didactic system has been experimentally tested; its efficiency has been proved; it is recommended for the usage in the teaching process in higher education institutions for the promotion of students' independent learning; field - pedagogy
