The paper focuses on the contrastive description and analysis of the binary concepts SUCCESS-FAILURE and УСПІХ-НЕВДАЧА with the purpose of identifying the national peculiarities of their verbalization in the American and Ukrainian linguistic conscience using the data of the contemporary dictionaries and the results of a psycholinguistic experiment. A study of the lexicographic verbalization of the concepts under consideration has proved greater nominative strength and communicative relevance of the concepts SUCCESS-FAILURE in English as compared to the concepts УСПІХ-НЕВДАЧА in Ukrainian. An analysis of verbal data obtained in the psycholinguistic experiment has shown that the interpretative zones of the concepts SUCCESS-FAILURE and the concepts УСПІХ-НЕВДАЧА are the most voluminous parts of their macrostructure in both contrasted languages, which is indicative of a greater significance of individual speakers' experience in the encyclopedic, sociocultural, paramiologic, evaluative, pragmatic and practical spheres for the American English and Ukrainian speakers in the comprehension of the phenomena of success and failure. The conceptual and denotative characteristic features, as well as the perceptual and cognitive experience of the comprehension of the concepts discussed are much less important for the speakers in the contrasted linguistic societies. A model of the concept has been proposed on the basis of referring the cognitive features formulated in the experiment to the perceptual and cognitive, conceptual and interpretative layers of the macrostructure of the concepts SUCCESS-FAILURE in American English and the concepts УСПІХ-НЕВДАЧА in Ukrainian. Field stratification of the contrasted concepts has been made via distribution of the macrostructural cognitive features to the levels of the nucleus, the core-by, the distant and the back peripheries by the criterion of their vividity.
